Music Critic: Anathema and Avishai Cohen

I saw two of the best concerts of my life in the past 5 days! Anathema in Frankfurt (for the 2nd time) and Avishai Cohen in Mainz (for the first time).

Anathema were introducing their new album (weather systems) and play a lot of new songs and some old classics.

Positive things:

1) The duration - over 2h15min
2) Lee (the female singer - guest) came along, making the setlist more diversified and the songs more complete
3) The crowd
4) The choice of the songs - we were asked to do so!
5) The increasing quality as musicians since the last time I saw them

and so on...

Here's a little taste of what happened:

And what about Avishai Cohen!? I am still speechless! I felt like I had never witnessed live music before! A quality behind the normal in this little world for such a big talent!

Positive things:

1) Diversified setlist

2) 4 encores!! 

3) The duration: over 2h05min - when it was meant to be an 80min show

4) The proximity with the band

5) The friendly atmosphere 

6) THE QUALITY! 

Only one bad thing: the smell of alcohol in the room, everybody had beer bottles... In an intimate jazz concert in a small venue.. maybe it's the way I am, but I consider that this only has space in places like summer festivals.

I will even choose as an example one of my favorite songs ever! I must confess though that if this was in Portuguese I may not have enjoyed it so much - due to the possible translation, that is.

Boost for the day!

The first entry of the day will be a mixture of music and words.

A primeira entrada do dia é uma mistura de música e palavras.

Today I (re)came across two things that I actually think that combine perfectly: a musical piece by Liszt and a "shared thought" of Dr. Seuss.

Hoje voltei a deparar-me com duas coisas que considero uma combinação perfeita: uma composição musical de Liszt e um pensamento de Dr. Seuss.

My suggestion would be: Start listening to the song and when it reaches the climax read the sentence.

A minha sugestão seria: comecem a ouvir a música e quando esta chegar ao seu climax comecem a ler a frase em questão.

I know it would be, but I want to add some more to it.

Vou iniciar esta entrada do blog dizendo apenas: Música Pimba Portuguesa!

É suficiente, não é?

Eu sei que seria, mas quero adicionar mais algumas coisas. 

Pimba music is probably one of the funniest things that the Portuguese culture has to offer (when considered a joke, you can't take it for real - although some people actually do so!). The lyrics are usually funny and kinky (sexually) in a subtle way. 

A música Pimba é provavelmente uma das coisas mais engraçadas que a cultura portuguesa tem para oferecer (quando considerada uma brincadeira, não se pode levar a sério - embora muitos o façam!). As letras costumam ser divertidas e marotas (sexualmente) de um modo subtil.

My question is: what would happen if this songs were sang in English? What would happen?

A questão que coloco é a seguinte: o que aconteceria se estas músicas fossem cantadas em inglês? O que aconteceria?

Following the previous post about cinema, let's have a look at the translation of the titles from series in Brazil (in Portugal most of them are not even translated - which, in my opinion, as a translator, is actually the right decision, because it allows the show to keep its original charisma).

No seguimento da entrada anterior do blog sobre cinema, vejamos a tradução dos títulos de algumas séries de televisão no Brasil (em Portugal, os nomes das séries não são muitas das vezes traduzidos - algo que, na minha opinião como tradutor, é acertado, pois permite que o programa mantenha o seu carisma original).

And how hard it is to translate something related to each of them! Because an art has a personal delicate touch that can (usual does) get lost when you change the language  (for example). However, worse than losing a bit of the inner magic is when the translator decides to simple kill a movie when he just loses its own plot and goes to a battle against the movies like the highlander assuming that "there can be only one" and by doing so decides to decapitate the title.


É muito difícil traduzir algo relacionado com qualquer uma destas artes! Por que uma obra de arte tem um toque pessoal delicado que pode perder-se (e assim acontece normalmente) quando se altera a língua (por exemplo). Porém, pior do que perder um pouco desta magia é o momento em que o tradutor decide simplesmente assassinar o filme quando perde o juízo e inicia uma batalha contra os filmes na pele dum imortal que nos grita que "só um pode viver" e que ao fazê-lo decide decapitar o filme. 


In my home country (Portugal) usually I find myself thinking: why? I was told some years ago that the translator is not to blame, is the marketing people that try to make the new translated title sound more mainstream and to do so they change it radically. However, the movie titles murder in Portugal is a smooth one when compared to the one in the Brazilian market. 


Quando estou no meu país (Portugal) dou comigo a pensar: porquê? Foi-me dito no passado que o responsável por este crime não é o tradutor mas sim o departamento de marketing que tenta tornar o novo título traduzido mais aliciante e, por tal motivo, decidem, por vezes, alterá-lo radicalmente. No entanto, o assassinato de títulos de filmes em Portugal é bastante suave quando comparado com o mercado brasileiro.

Twist the cucumber!

Today I was trying to remember where I've seen the weirdest translations ever. The answer was clear to me: the subtitles on television.

Hoje tentei lembrar-me onde tinha visto as traduções mais estranhas de sempre. A resposta que obtive foi bastante clara: nas legendas televisivas.

I've seen all kinds of things. I will never forget sentences like:

Já vi de tudo. Nunca esquecerei frases como:

Let's make a toast = Vamos fazer uma tosta!

or / ou

It evolved from a caterpillar into a butterfly = Ela passou de tractor a borboleta!

And that made me think... I'm glad they don't have Portuguese shows on the British television! Because we use a lot of proverbs.

Isto fez-me pensar... Ainda bem que não há programas portugueses na televisão britânica! Pois usamos muitos provérbios.

Can you imagine what would happen?

Little French Girl

Food is a very important part of my life. I don't eat just because I have to, I do it because I love to do so! (Thank God I love physical exercise too, or else I don't know what could happen ahah)
One can ask me why I love food so much and my answer would have to include the fact that I am Portuguese, the land where the best food in the world can be found! (Surprisingly I don't think I'm being too patriotic here, Portugal has a lot of good things and bad things like every other country, but the food... the food.. the quality can't be matched. As simple as that).

A comida tem um papel muito importante na minha vida. Eu não como apenas por necessidade, faço-o também por paixão! (Graças a Deus que também adoro exercício físico, caso contrário não sei não...)
Podem perguntar-me por que raio gosto tanto de comida e a minha resposta teria sempre de incluir o facto de eu ser português, que sou do país onde se encontra a melhor comida do mundo! (Surpreendentemente não creio estar a ser demasiado patriótico, Portugal tem muitas coisas boas e muitas outras más, mas no que toca à comida... ai a comida.. a qualidade é incomparável. Tão simples como isso!).

The problem comes when we want to explain some dishes to foreign friends in a foreign language...

O problema surge quando queremos explicar alguns dos nossos pratos a amigos de outros países e numa língua estrangeira...

                                                       - imaginem explicar isto a uma amiga francesa, estranho hein?

2) Alheira - "A sausage with bread and stuff inside" - Yeah right, not sure if one can even imagine what the hell that is with such an explanation!
                                                                              - Pois, pois... não sei se alguém perceberá de que raio estou a falar com tamanha descrição!

Lost in a Portenglish world!

When you live abroad, away from your language and culture (and friends and family), you always end up speaking in English. No matter where you are (Germany, Spain, Poland...) and if you know or study the language of the country you are in, it makes your life run a bit more smoothly in terms of communication when you use the Brits' speech. Your new friends will understand you better, you will get the right dish in the restaurant and you reach the destination you had in mind.

Quando vivemos no estrangeiro, longe da nossa língua e cultura (e amigos e família), acabamos sempre por falar em inglês. Não interessa o local em que estiveres (Alemanha, Espanha, Polónia...) nem o facto de saberes ou estudares a língua do país em que te encontrares, é certo que a tua vida se torna muito mais fácil ao nível da comunicação quando utilizas o discurso de britânicos. Os teus novos amigos podem assim perceber-te melhor, no restaurante podes pedir o prato certo e podes mesmo chegar ao teu destino (acertado).

However, English can be a bit tricky for foreigners. Why? Well, no matter what your level or kind of education is (and trust me on this one, I have a Translator's degree), nor how natural and clear you want to sound in this language that you took as a loan from the guys of that rainy island, you always end up borrowing a bit of your heart to the words that come out of your mouth.

Porém, a língua inglesa pode ser um pouco traiçoeira para estrangeiros. Porquê? Bem, independentemente do tipo nível ou tipo de educação que tiveres (e acredita no que te digo, pois tenho um curso de tradutor) ou do quão natural ou claro que pretendas exprimir-te naquela língua que pediste emprestada à malta da ilha chuvosa, vais acabar sempre por conferir um pouco do teu coração às palavras que saem da tua boca.

In my case, my heart is as Portuguese as it gets! (surprise, surprise!)

No meu caso, o meu coração é do mais português que há! (que surpresa, hein!?)

The final result: You end up saying things that sound natural to you but when you come to your senses you realize that "what the hell did I just say!?", or, when you get used to it and it starts to sound funny, you do it on purpose for the laughs.

O resultado final: acabas por dizer coisas que te soam naturais mas assim que paras para pensar percebes que disseste uma bela asneira, ou, quando te habituas e te começas a divertir, já o fazes para arrancar umas gargalhadas.
