Music Critic: Anathema and Avishai Cohen

I saw two of the best concerts of my life in the past 5 days! Anathema in Frankfurt (for the 2nd time) and Avishai Cohen in Mainz (for the first time).

Anathema were introducing their new album (weather systems) and play a lot of new songs and some old classics.

Positive things:

1) The duration - over 2h15min
2) Lee (the female singer - guest) came along, making the setlist more diversified and the songs more complete
3) The crowd
4) The choice of the songs - we were asked to do so!
5) The increasing quality as musicians since the last time I saw them

and so on...

Here's a little taste of what happened:

And what about Avishai Cohen!? I am still speechless! I felt like I had never witnessed live music before! A quality behind the normal in this little world for such a big talent!

Positive things:

1) Diversified setlist
2) 4 encores!!
3) The duration: over 2h05min - when it was meant to be an 80min show
4) The proximity with the band
5) The friendly atmosphere
6) THE QUALITY!

Only one bad thing: the smell of alcohol in the room, everybody had beer bottles... In an intimate jazz concert in a small venue.. maybe it's the way I am, but I consider that this only has space in places like summer festivals.

And here's a taste of it too (not footage from Mainz sadly though):

Plug in Baby

Remember the Pimba Thread? What if we would do this exercise the other way around?! Imagine an English song in Portuguese...

Challenge Accepted!

Desafio aceite!

I will even choose as an example one of my favorite songs ever! I must confess though that if this was in Portuguese I may not have enjoyed it so much - due to the possible translation, that is.

Here we go then!

Aqui vamos então!

Muse - Plug in Baby

The original lyrics in English:

A letra original em inglês:

My plug in baby
Crucifies my enemies
When I'm tired of giving
My plug in baby
In unbroken virgin realities
Is tired of living
And I feel your loving,
Mine is gone

In Portuguese it would sound like:

Em português seria algo como:

A minha boneca (insuflável) eléctrica
Crucifica os meus inimigos
Quando eu estou farto de dar
A minha boneca (insuflável) eléctrica
Nas suas realidades virginais inquebráveis
Está farta de viver.
E eu sinto o teu amor,
O meu já lá vai.

Pretty, hun?

Bonito, hein?

Cheers!

Boost for the day!

The first entry of the day will be a mixture of music and words.

Today I (re)came across two things that I actually think that combine perfectly: a musical piece by Liszt and a "shared thought" of Dr. Seuss.

My suggestion would be: Start listening to the song and when it reaches the climax read the sentence.

Ready? Set... Go!

Preparados? Vamos lá!

Sing your life away!

I will start this thread just by saying this: Portuguese Pimba Music!
Enough, isn't it?
I know it would be, but I want to add some more to it.

Pimba music is probably one of the funniest things that the Portuguese culture has to offer (when considered a joke, you can't take it for real - although some people actually do so!). The lyrics are usually funny and kinky (sexually) in a subtle way.

My question is: what would happen if this songs were sang in English? What would happen?

Here are the examples, all from the Pimba King: Quim Barreiros.

Seguem-se alguns exemplos, todos da autoria do rei do Pimba: Quim Barreiros.

Enjoy!

1) Quim Barreiros - A cabritinha (The little goat)

Adora luxo e bem-estar

Ela adivinha a hora que chego a casa
E vai logo preparar
Os peitinhos para eu mamar

-----------

I like to suck
only on the breasts of the little goat
I suck at any time I want because the goat is mine

The little goat likes good food, good bed and good life
Loves luxury and well-being

She guesses the hour I come home
And gets her breasts ready
for me to suck on!

2) Quim Barreiros - Bacalhau à Portuguesa (Portuguese Codfish)

Quero cheirar teu bacalhau Maria
Quero cheirar teu bacalhau
Mariazinha deixa-me ir à cozinha,deixa-me ir à cozinha

-----------

I want to smell your codfish, Mary
I want to smell your codfish
Little Mary let me go to the kitchen, let me go to the kitchen
To smell your codfish

Your codfish is really a beauty
You are the Portuguese with your special dish
If the smell is good, even better is the stew
You are the favorite dish of the people of Portugal

3) Quim Barreiros - A garagem da Vizinha (The neighbour's garage)

-----------

She said: nobody uses it since he left me!
Inside of the garage there's even spider webs!
Put your car inside, or else it will gain rust!
The garage is used but your car will like it!

I put the car, I take the car, whenever I feel like it
What a tiny garage, such a sweet woman
I take it early in the morning and put it back at night, sometimes in the afternoon
I even change the oil in the neighbour's garage!
